24 Jul IB ESS SL and HL: Current Syllabus and Revision Guide
The current IB ESS course began teaching in August 2024 and had its first assessment in May 2026. It is available at SL and HL. Use materials for your course and level rather than treating older SL resources as a complete description of current requirements.
What connects the course?
Perspectives, systems and sustainability connect the topics. Learn to explain environmental processes, interpret evidence and consider societal decisions. Knowledge and application both matter.
What is specific to HL?
The HL lenses are environmental law, environmental and ecological economics, and environmental ethics. Apply relevant lens content when a question calls for it. This does not mean inserting all three lenses into every essay. SL students should not be told that the HL requirements apply identically to their assessment.
The revised IA
The individual investigation has the same six criteria at SL and HL and a maximum report length of 3,000 words. It contributes 25% of the SL result and 20% of the HL result. Its strategy discussion examines tensions between perspectives and their consequences. See the IA structure guide.
Build a revision checklist for your level
Use three columns: course topic, evidence of a difficulty and next practice task. For example, a weak graph response might lead to data-description practice; a vague essay judgement might lead to evaluating one strategy. HL students should also record relevant lens content. Revisit the checklist after each practice attempt.
Choose revision priorities from evidence
Use school feedback, recent answers and the syllabus to identify gaps. Practise unfamiliar data and case studies alongside topic knowledge. Urban systems is part of the course, but this does not justify predicting a particular exam topic.
Ask your teacher about official specimen papers and released examination materials. Older questions can support relevant skills but may differ in content and format. May 2026 has already taken place; check access to its materials rather than claiming no past examinations exist.
Check coverage across all eight topics
Organise revision under foundation; ecology; biodiversity and conservation; water; land; atmosphere and climate change; natural resources; and human populations and urban systems. Link processes across topics: for example, land use can influence runoff, water quality and biodiversity. Use your school’s course guide to identify the precise SL or HL statements you need.
