Choosing a topic and research question

Start with your interests and the data you can realistically access. We can discuss how to narrow your topic, define what you want to investigate and assess whether your question is manageable within your school’s timeline.

Planning a feasible investigation

Work through the connection between your question and your method. Support can include discussing variables, sampling, data sources, practical limitations and the information you need to record. Follow your school’s safety requirements and confirm your plan with your teacher.

Understanding data analysis

If you are unsure how to organise results, choose graphs or explain patterns, we can work through the reasoning together. The aim is to help you understand your choices and what your evidence can support.

Understanding strategy and perspectives

The current IA includes a strategy criterion. We can discuss how a response to your environmental issue creates tensions between perspectives, and how to explain those tensions using evidence. Bring your school’s assessment guidance and your own research notes. Refer to the official IB ESS guide for the current criteria.

Developing evaluation and structure

Learn how to discuss limitations, consider improvements and connect your findings back to your research question. We can also discuss the purpose of each section and how to use the assessment guidance supplied by your school.

How individual IA support works

1. Share your starting point. Tell me your IB year, level, deadline and the part of the IA you find difficult.
2. Choose a focus. A lesson can address a specific question or a stage of your investigation.
3. Apply what you learn. You make the research decisions and carry out your own work, using the session to understand your next steps.

Please follow your school’s rules on external support and feedback. Tutoring develops your understanding; your investigation, analysis and writing remain your own.

Make your ESS IA lesson focused and useful

Before your lesson, send your IB year, SL or HL level, deadline and one specific question or difficulty. If you have already started, bring your research question, method or a small sample of your data, together with your school’s guidance.

At the start, we agree a manageable goal for the session: for example, refining a research question, choosing a suitable graph or understanding how to evaluate a method. You practise applying the explanation to your own investigation, and we finish by reviewing what is clearer and identifying your next step.
