01 Aug IB ESS Notes and Textbook: Current SL & HL Resources
Reviewed 5 October 2026 · ESS SL and HL, first assessment 2026.
Choose IB ESS notes and a textbook that match your current course. Environmental Systems and Societies is now offered at SL and HL, with first teaching in 2024 and first assessment in 2026. An older book can explain useful concepts, but its topic order, IA guidance and exam practice may belong to the previous course.
How to choose an IB ESS textbook
Check the edition, ISBN and syllabus statement rather than relying on a similar cover or title. Look for coverage of the 2024 subject guide, your level, and the current assessment requirements. Ask your school which edition it uses before buying a second book.
One current option is Oxford Resources for IB DP Environmental Systems and Societies: Course Book by Gillian Williams and Jill Rutherford, published in 2024, ISBN 9781382044011. Oxford describes it as covering the 2024 subject guide and including HL lenses. This is different from earlier Oxford Course Companion editions with similar author names. Check the exact edition and any digital access conditions with the publisher or seller.
The publisher’s listing for this Oxford edition provides its publication details. Use the official IB ESS guide and your teacher’s current guidance to check syllabus and assessment details.
What current IB ESS notes should cover
Organise your notes around the eight topics: foundation; ecology; biodiversity and conservation; water; land; atmosphere and climate change; natural resources; and human populations and urban systems. Connect ideas through perspectives, systems and sustainability instead of memorising isolated definitions.
For HL, include the additional HL content and the lenses of environmental law, environmental and ecological economics, and environmental ethics. Label SL and HL material clearly so that your revision fits your course.
Turn notes into useful revision
- Explain a process: write a short cause-and-effect explanation, then check it against your textbook.
- Interpret evidence: practise reading a graph or table, using units and distinguishing a pattern from an explanation.
- Apply a case study: record its location, source and date, the environmental issue, relevant evidence and competing perspectives.
- Evaluate a response: consider its benefits, limitations and the conditions under which it could work.
- Review your errors: note whether you missed knowledge, evidence, a command term or a step in your reasoning.
For example, after revising a water topic, explain a process from memory, analyse a relevant dataset and evaluate a management response. This is an original revision activity, not an IB exam question or an assessed model answer.
Check exam and IA resources separately
Use our current ESS SL and HL exam guide to check the paper formats, and the ESS IA structure guide for the investigation requirements. The current IA has a maximum report length of 3,000 words and includes a strategy criterion; older advice may omit it.
Older questions can still support topic practice when clearly labelled by session and course. They do not necessarily reproduce the current SL or HL paper format. Read our guide to using ESS past papers before planning a timed practice session.
